Adaptive Communication: Make Meaning Land

Most people believe they communicate clearly. Their evidence is usually their own intention.

Clarity is better judged by what reaches the other person.

Adaptive Communication, one of the four CFQ pillars, focuses on that gap.

Communication always has an audience

A message may feel perfectly clear to people who share your assumptions. That does not make it universally clear.

Adaptive communicators pay attention to:

These factors shape whether meaning arrives intact.

Adaptation is strategic

Adaptive Communication involves selecting the form that gives the message the best chance of being understood.

Sometimes that means greater directness. Sometimes more context. Sometimes a private conversation. Sometimes a question works better than an instruction.

The substance can remain the same while the delivery changes.

Feedback is a useful test

Consider the message: "This needs to improve."

The standard is clear. Adaptive Communication asks: how should this be delivered so the person understands the seriousness of the issue and can still engage constructively?

That question improves both clarity and dignity.

Check understanding

Leaders do not have to guess whether a message landed. They can ask.

Useful phrases: "How did you understand what I just said?" Or: "I want to check that I explained this clearly." Or: "I think we may be using the same words differently."

Communication becomes more reliable when interpretation is checked rather than assumed.
